Egg prices continue to rise and hailstorms have caused serious damage
2022. April 11.Farmers are not even out of the spring work, helped by the sudden good weather.
The news from the sector is also coming in, and here we have the latest figures and interesting facts.
Egg prices rise worldwide and in Hungary
Inflation doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon, so it’s not at all surprising that the packing place price of table eggs (sizes M and L) has risen to 114% compared to last year.
According to foreign reports, US egg production is expected to increase, which is not significant in percentage points – 1 percent – but will weigh heavily in terms of unit production.
On a yearly basis, this year’s quarter is 2021.
Compared to the first quarter of 2021, the increase could be almost 2 per cent, which means that per capita egg consumption is expected to be that much higher.
EU imports of eggs have fallen significantly compared to last year to 18,000 tonnes, a 30 per cent drop.
Imports of eggs from Ukraine also fell more significantly, by 39%.
Imports from the USA fell by 27 per cent and Chinese imports by 34 per cent.
In 2021, exports rose by 13 percent to 284 thousand tonnes compared to the previous period.
The EU supplies most eggs to Japan, which accounts for 28 percent of exports.
Switzerland also buys significant quantities of eggs from the EU, accounting for 14 percent of total exports.
Japan and Switzerland bought a combined 118 thousand tonnes of eggs and egg products, but Japanese purchases are increasing while Swiss purchases are decreasing, although overall there is an upward trend.
There is also news from elsewhere in the world, with exports to Thailand, for example, falling to 84.5 per cent, while those to Mauritania have risen to 155 per cent.
In the first 11 weeks of this year compared to the same period last year, the European Commission shows that the price of table eggs per pack has risen by more than 18 per cent, almost reaching €150 per 100 kilograms.
The situation is no better in Hungary.
According to the data of the Market Price Information System of the Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI PÁIR), the price of table eggs from cage farming in Hungary has increased by 114% to HUF 31.64 per egg.
A detailed analysis of the data shows that the price of eggs in cartons of size class “L” increased significantly by 20 per cent to HUF 38.74 per unit, while the price of eggs in size class “M” increased by HUF 33.
However, it is interesting to note that the price of tray eggs in size “L” increased less, with an increase of only 11 per cent to HUF 31.72 per unit.
Eggs of size “M” cost 28.68 HUF.
If we look at the price trend for deep dish table eggs, we see an interesting thing.
For both sizes, the price of carton eggs is lower, while the price of tray eggs is higher than the price of cage eggs.
The “M” boxed eggs cost 31.45 HUF/piece and the “M” tray eggs 35.08 HUF/piece.
The price of “L” size eggs is 36,45 HUF per carton and 44,59 HUF per tray.
In conclusion, egg prices are increasing significantly and this trend is not expected to change in the coming period.
