Preparing for winter conditions: what to do in agriculture

2024. October 23.

Many people think that autumn is the end of the year, when there is nothing left to do in the garden or on the farm. But there is plenty of work for gardening and growing in every season.

The careful farmer ploughs up his fields, prepares the soil for spring sowing, provides it with nutrients and ensures that when the good weather comes, all that is left is to sow. The old ways are great, but how can we prepare for winter conditions?

Ice and snow

What happens in agriculture when it is cold and freezing during the day? As the weather gets colder, winter comes faster and faster. Nevertheless, there is still something for those working in the fields to do, because life cannot stop on the farm, on the farm, on the farm. It is no coincidence that the agricultural sector is not dormant at this time of year either, and it is no coincidence that agricultural machinery is still on the roads. Preparing for winter often involves a big financial investment. Fortunately, there are plenty of agricultural subsidies to help you prepare. Farmers don’t just stay at home in winter. Although nothing grows in the fields, it is not the only thing to do. It is also the time to buy seeds to sow for the following year, which can be planted in the spring when the sun shines for the first time. These will later become the harvest. But this is mainly office work, which farmers can do in the heat. It is also important to take care of the pesticides, which will be needed in the spring to avoid a rush. The winter period can also be a good time to plan everything carefully, reviewing income and expenditure, and making improvements. This could involve updating machinery, inspecting and repairing farm equipment so that by the time you get it on the road, you don’t have to deal with any faults.

Caring for animals

We must not forget the animals. Just as in summer, we need to make sure our animals are safe in winter. Extreme weather conditions can affect paddocks and sheds. We need to create conditions where they can survive the winter without problems. As not all animals tolerate the cold well, it makes a big difference how warm we can keep them in their pens and sheds. Check the windows and windows, and pay particular attention to smaller animals, calves, piglets and chicks. If we feel that there is room for improvement, it is time to improve.

Farming in the open land

We cannot only produce outdoors in winter. Even in the cold months, plants can still grow in the cold months in our greenhouses and greenhouses. This is mainly due to the materials we use to cover them, which are effective at storing heat. In addition, there are heated versions in which the crops do not stop growing in winter.

Tasks around agricultural machinery

After thorough cleaning and preservation, the machines are placed in the most ideal containers. Higher value machinery needs a covered space, while motorised equipment should be checked for cold tolerance of the antifreeze before it is placed in its place. Drain the fuel tank and remember to empty the lubricating and hydraulic oils. Take care of the batteries and removable monitors in good time, and store the electronics in a storage room. Before storing cleaned machines for the winter, check for wear and tear, cracks and paint defects. Make a list of any problems you have found so that you have the information you need to make repairs and buy parts later. Last but not least, don’t forget to check the condition of the drive trains. The belt drives should also be loosened. If you intend to store the machine outdoors, be sure to dismantle them and put them in a storage room. Although winter is a quieter time for the agricultural sector, it is also a time when life does not stop. It is by no means a time to be bored. The work requires year-round attention, so we can make room for development plans, improvements and growth.
