Contract work vs own fleet: when is it better?
2026. April 12.One of the strategic questions for agricultural businesses is whether it is worth building up their own machinery or whether they should outsource certain processes. The decision is not only important from a financial point of view, but also has a major impact on the efficiency, flexibility and long-term sustainability of the farm.
What is agricultural contract work?
Agricultural contracting means that the farmer hires an external service provider to carry out certain operations. This may include combine harvesting, soil cultivation or precision spraying. Contractors are usually equipped with modern machinery and many years of experience and expertise, often offering more efficient technology than a smaller farm could do on its own.
On the other hand, companies that have their own fleet of machines, where the farmer himself purchases and operates the tractors, machinery and other equipment. In this way, they carry out the tasks with their own labour and machinery.
What should you expect in terms of costs?
In agriculture, buying machinery requires not only a lot of research, but also a lot of capital. A modern combine harvester or a precision seeder can cost tens of millions of forints, which can be a serious problem for a beginner. It is therefore no coincidence that many farmers find it difficult to get started because of the high cost of machinery and equipment.
One of the main advantages of contract work is that no major initial investment is needed. The farmer is paid only for the work actually done, which can be particularly advantageous when the farm is small or the production is variable. In many cases, it is very difficult to foresee what can be expected in a given period.
However, in the long term it is possible to reduce unit costs by having your own machinery, but this only works if the utilisation of machinery is high. This also means that, especially on larger farms with stable production, there can be a big advantage in not contracting out certain operations but using your own machinery.
The importance of seasonal work
It is important to mention the main characteristic of agriculture: seasonality. At sowing and harvesting times, there is a sudden need for greater capacity, but at other times machinery is less used. This is why contract work can be very useful in this situation, as farmers can quickly access more powerful machinery during the peak season without having to maintain it all year round.
However, if you own your own machinery, there is a risk that expensive machinery may be idle for part of the year, which can reduce the efficiency of the farm. This does not mean that a quality tractor or combine harvester is not an advantage, as they are not only needed in season. However, there are some machines that are really only used once a month.
The role of technology in development
Modern agriculture is increasingly moving towards precision technologies. GPS-based seeding, drone surveying and automated spraying all require significant investment. But there is no doubt that they are needed if the farm is not just to be a family business, but to be able to grow and develop.

However, contractors are often at the forefront of this field, and it is often through them that farmers first encounter new technologies. This also gives smaller farms the opportunity to access modern solutions and finance them themselves. But it can also be a good way for people to get to know these machines better, to find out which type is right for them and then buy the right one.
The question of labour
But the biggest problems are undoubtedly labour shortages and an ageing society – at least in the farming sector. Maintaining your own machinery fleet requires not only the right machines, but also skilled operators. Modern equipment is useless if there is no one to operate it. However, in the case of contract work, this problem is partly solved, as the operators are also provided by the service providers, making tools available to smaller farms, for example, which are not understood by the members.
